VAT, Tax & Ownership Structures
How and where you own a yacht affects tax, VAT status and liability — get it right at purchase, not after.
VAT status follows the yacht
In many jurisdictions a yacht carries a VAT status that affects where it can cruise and its resale value. “VAT paid”, temporary admission and commercial exemption are very different positions — confirm status before you buy.
Private vs commercial use
Registering and operating a yacht commercially (for charter) can change its VAT and tax treatment, but comes with survey, crewing and compliance obligations. The right choice depends on how you actually intend to use it.
Ownership structure
Yachts are often owned through a company for liability, succession and efficiency. Structure interacts with flag and cruising area, so plan it early with a specialist rather than retro-fitting it later.
This is specialist territory
Tax and VAT rules vary by country and change often. NGY works with maritime lawyers and tax advisers so your structure fits your plans — we point you to the right specialist rather than guessing.
