What a survey covers

An independent surveyor inspects the hull, structure, systems and safety equipment and (with a mechanic) the engines and running gear. On many yachts the hull is checked out of the water and its moisture and structural condition assessed.

The sea trial

Running the yacht under way reveals what a dockside look cannot: engine performance and temperatures, handling, vibration, electronics and systems under load. Attend it, and bring your broker and the engine surveyor.

Use the findings

A survey almost always finds something. Under a properly written contract you can ask the seller to fix material issues, reduce the price, or withdraw with your deposit returned. This is where good representation pays for itself.

Choose your own surveyor
