Where and how a yacht is registered affects tax, crewing, cruising and resale — decide before you close.
Why the flag matters
A yacht’s flag state sets the legal framework it sails under: safety and manning rules, mortgage registration, and often tax and VAT treatment. The right flag simplifies ownership and resale; the wrong one adds cost and complication.
Common choices
Popular registries for larger yachts include the Marshall Islands, Cayman Islands, Malta, Jersey and the Red Ensign group, each with different rules on private vs commercial use, tonnage and survey. Smaller boats are often registered domestically.
Get advice before closing
