Designed and constructed during Catana's shipyard prime, the Catana 581/582 was the queen of the fleet. Early in the production cycle Catana commissioned the Paris design firm Caligo to design an upscale interior, which became known as the Catana 582 Caligo. In addition Catana upgraded the deck plan with carbon fiber forward crossbeam, carbon fiber longeron/bow sprit, carbon fiber mast without spreaders, natural ventilation system, and stylish helm stations/seats.

Tortuga (x-The Saint) was built for a Miami client of mine and she was the second C582 built. One change from the original Caligo layout was the workshop in lieu of the standard starboard crew cabin and extending the owner's bathroom forward which allowed more wardrobe storage in the owner's starboard hull. As The Saint her owners mostly made short trips to the Bahamas and Florida West coast but mostly stayed docked in Miami.

In 2018 I sold The Saint to a previous German client whose previous catamaran was a Catana 472 Caligo, name changed to Tortuga and shipped from West Palm Beach, FL to Elba, Italy where an extensive refit took place under the supervision of the same German shipwright and his Italian team who has maintained the owner's previous sailboats. Since 2019 Tortuga seasonally cruised the Mediterranean until late 2024 when the owner and his family made their Atalanta crossing exploring the Caribbean and Bahamas arriving to SE Florida in May 2025.

CONSTRUCTION:

The two outer hull molds and one inner hull/bridgedeck mold are vacuum bagged using vinylester resin,cored with PVC closed cell foam with unidirectional cloth for outer laminate & Twaron® aramid cloth for inner laminate.

The separately molded daggerboard trunks are laminated to be seven times stronger than the daggerboards.

All 21 primary and secondary bulkheads are carbon reinforced unidirectional cloth cored with Airex® closed cell foam.

The spade rudders have self-adjusting JP3 bushings with Whitlock rack & pinion steering. Elliptical skegs protectthe rudders and props.

The deck/cockpit/coachroof is a one piece mold, vacuum-bagged using vinylester resin, cored withNidacore® honeycomb with unidirectional cloth for outer laminate & Twaron® aramid cloth for inner laminate,and molded diamond pattern non-skid decks with teak laid cockpit and transom steps.

The deck to hull joint is bonded by fiberglass creating a seamless monocoque waterproof and rigid structure.
