What the Press Has to Say about Sandpiper

South Shore Boatworks of Halifax, MA completed and launched the first of it's Gurnet Point 25's. Sandpiper III is a semi-built-down lobster-style cruiser designed by Jamie Lowell of Lowell Brothers in Yarmouth, Maine. Sandpiper III was commissioned for a Rhode Island couple as a day cruiser and has accommodations for overnight trips. The hull, deck and cabin are molded fiberglass / foam core construction. The owners' ideas were incorporated into the interior layout, including a nav station with fully integrated Raymarine electronics backed up by a Ritchie compass...

The self-bailing cockpit floor features a traditional hand-laid teak deck, with still more teak on the gunwales and toe rails. A bronze anchor platform with teak trim allows easy deployment of the plow-style anchor. The hardware throughout is polished bronze.

On sea trials, Sandpiper III's 180 hp- Yanmar inboard diesel gave a top speed of 20.6 knots and cruised at 16.5 - 17 knots using 3.5 gallons per hour. The bow's high downeast style flare knocked down the spray allowing little or no water to hit the windshield or cockpit.

The large bronze rudder and full keel provided very responsive control and the ability to turn the boat in its own length.

Deck

The exterior space on Sandpiper is perfect for day cruises and entertaining.

There is a very well thought out fold-away helm seat with seat and back cushions, and a matching companion seat to port.

There is a large bench along the transom, with matching Sunbrella cushions, and the engine box provides additional seating with cushions.

Engine access is exceptional when the engine box is in the vertical position (on hinges).

There are storage lockers under the aft bench seat and access hatches through the sole for batteries and other mechanical systems.

The custom davits can rotate to face forward to limit the length of the boat or can be left in the aft position overhanging the transom.

There are convenient steps to access the side deck and secure handrails leading to the foredeck.

An overhead hatch is installed on the forward house and there are four opening portlights on the house sides.

The anchor can be deployed from the foredeck off the bow sprit / roller.

Interior

The interior is simple and functional.

Immediately to starboard is a galley with ice box, sink with bronze hand pump, camp stove and electrical distribution panel.

Across to port is the enclosed head with privacy door.

Forward is a V berth with shelves outboard.

There are four opening portlights and one overhead hatch for light and ventilation.
